#Success2014: Become a Marketing Pro With Twitter

Twitter_BirdEvery business, if it wants to succeed, has to grow and continue building its brand. There are many pieces involved in the puzzle of how to do it, and successful social networking is just one of them. Twitter, a social networking and microblogging platform, is popular for personal use, but it can be even more powerful when used as a marketing tool for your business.

Twitter is allowing companies to reach customers in ways that they wouldn’t have before. More than half a billion people are on Twitter, so if you’re promoting a product or service you already have a rather significant audience to pull from. So what if it only allows you 140 characters to reach out to your customer. Don’t fret. That’s more than enough to advertise your company and effectively get your message out.

As far as your Twitter bio goes, you want to be clear about:

1) who you are

2) what your company does

In the bio, also include a link to your company website (or more specifically, a landing page on the site) so that people can be directed there and start shopping. And get this….you have 20 more characters to use in the bio than for an actual tweet, so you have a little more wiggle room to be creative and grab attention.

In terms of actual tweets, you want to promote your business while also focusing on what will get the attention of your target audience. You want to post regularly about any promotions, deals, or exciting new products that you’re launching. Don’t get lazy – maintain an active presence on Twitter. Always include a link to your site and intriguing calls to action. Twitter’s character limitations are perfect for short, interesting, and to-the-point calls to action.

Part of the social networking effort in generating business involves increases the number of followers you have. It’s a simple concept: the more followers you have, the more people who will be viewing your tweet. And don’t think you’ll be successful by ignoring your followers if they reach out to you. Outreach is critical. It’s important to respond to them if they tweet you with a question or concern. It shows them that you care and you’re interested in what they have to say.

Got a special 20% off deal you’re running? Put it in a tweet. You can even take this a step further and create incentives for your Twitter followers so they have a reason to do business with you. To track your Twitter marketing efforts, you can even run a special Twitter-only promotion to see how people are responding. One of the best things about Twitter is that it’s free. So you can increase your outreach and still manage to save a few advertising dollars. You can simply compose your tweet that includes your offer and click Tweet, and it immediately goes out to a large audience.

Twitter is a good way to get a real gauge of what customers are saying about you and your company. By viewing tweets from customers about your product or service, you can gain some very valuable insight about what’s working for your company and what isn’t, and adjust your strategy accordingly.

Of course, this won’t happen overnight. Gaining a following, even on Twitter, takes time and patience. But as the old saying goes, slow and steady wins the race. Happy tweeting!
