How Does Metallic Printing Work?

Metallic printing uses actual ink, which means you can design in a full spectrum of colors. Metallic inks also work best when they are printed on glossy material, which is why we always use premium 16 pt. cardstock. The gloss helps absorbs less ink, so it stays on the paper’s surface and results in maximum shine.

Aside from metallic printing’s glossy finish, we can also print additional spot UV for areas you would like to highlight, such as your logo or other important text. Spot UV printing means you can choose to apply a layer of UV coating on a specific area in your design. It provides a tactile effect and adds depth and contrast to your prints.

How Do I Design Metallic Prints?

Here’s what you should keep in mind when designing metallic prints:

Keep your font size to 12 points or above. Anything smaller may be difficult to read in metallic ink. You should also choose simple and easy-to-read sans-serif fonts.

Use lighter colors. The metallic effect may not be as evident when used on darker colors. Set your file to CMYK color mode for accurate printing.

Submit your design file with two (2) layers. The first layer is your standard CMYK layer, and the second is the silver foil mask layer. The mask layer should show where the metallic printing will be applied. Mark the metallic area with 100% K or black and then render the non-metallic parts in white. For spot UV, repeat the same process but with another mask layer.

Be sure to place at least a 1/16” gap between spot UV and metallic designs as they cannot overlap during the printing process.

If you need help with your design, our prepress team can provide a free design proof at checkout. Your design file will be inspected to see if it matches our printing guidelines, and you will need to approve a PDF proof before we proceed with production.

FAQs

What is the difference between metallic printing and foil stamping?
Metallic printing and foil stamping vary in process and visual effects. Metallic prints can be designed in any color because we use actual ink. Foil stamping entails “stamping” foil onto the paper using heat and pressure. Foil is only available in limited colors like gold, silver, and copper.

How do I get a free file proof?
On the product page, after selecting the printing and delivery options, you can click Start With Free Proof in the Upload Artwork section. You can then upload your design and proceed to checkout. Once you have confirmed your order, a member from our prepress team will review your design to make sure it will print correctly. You will receive a PDF proof of your design within a few hours. We will only print your order once you have approved the proof through email.

I don’t have a design yet, do you offer templates?
We offer free print templates you can download from the product page Templates tab. These templates are blank but contain predefined guidelines like the bleed, trim, and safety zone to help you get started on your design. Just select your preferred product size and download the ZIP file in your preferred file format.

Do you provide free product samples?
Yes, you can request a free sample kit by filling out the request form and specifying the product you want to receive. This sample kit includes printouts of our available paper stocks and coatings. By ordering our sample kit, you can compare various materials and coatings to give you an idea of how your final printed piece will look before ordering.

How soon will I receive my order?
To get an estimated delivery date, select your preferred banner printing options on the order calculator. After, click Get Delivery Estimate and input your 5-digit ZIP code. This will automatically generate delivery dates and costs you can choose from.
