How to Choose the Best Box Style
for Your Product

Engage Customers With a Custom Box Design

Packaging is just as important as the product itself. A well-designed custom box can persuade a customer to buy your product.

According to a study, 72% of Americans agree that packaging design influences buying decisions. The materials used in custom boxes are also an important factor in selecting which products to buy.

How do you choose the best for your business? In this article, we’ll guide you in choosing a custom box style that fits your brand.

Benefits of Printing Custom Packaging Boxes

Custom boxes can elevate the unboxing experience. If unboxing your product excites your customers, then you’ve done a great job.

Your box design can influence what consumers think of your company, so having an attractive and functional custom box design will help you stand out in a crowded marketplace—in a brick-and-mortar store or online. It also helps justify high price points as in the case of luxury products.

Beyond aesthetics, custom boxes keep your products organized and safe. Custom boxes are not created only for promotions. They also serve different purposes—to protect your product from elements that could alter its quality and keep it secure while in transit.

How to Choose a Custom Box Style for Your Product

Custom boxes come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and styles. Here are some custom box basics that can help you choose the right packaging for your product:

Budget

Good packaging will make your brand memorable. But let’s be honest here: it’s not practical to spend a lot when you think you’ll have a low return on investment. Custom boxes can cost only a few cents each if you’re ordering them in bulk.

The price depends on how much customization you want to have. A box with all the bells and whistles (e.g., inside/outside printing, window cut-outs, spot UV, etc.) will cost a few dollars more than basic packaging. That said, look at packaging not as an added cost but as an opportunity to spread the word about your business. Set a budget and talk to printing companies about your options.

Material

When choosing the material for your custom boxes, consider the dimension and weight of your product. Cardstock is often used for product packaging because it’s lightweight, easy to fold, and cost-effective. It is best used as primary packaging for light items.

On the other hand, corrugated cardboard is thicker and is commonly used for shipping and mailer boxes. It has flutes, a waved design sandwiched between two liners, that act as reinforcement. These flutes support add extra protection to products during shipping.

Styles

When it comes to box packaging, there’s no shortage of options. Here we have the different box styles as your primary and secondary packaging.

Product Boxes
Product boxes are perhaps the most common style that we see. These are primary packaging, like pasta and soap boxes, which hold the finished product. Product boxes make it convenient for customers to handle products. They also contain branding, nutritional, and other information that can help consumers make the right buying decision.

  • Straight Tuck End – These boxes have top and bottom closure panels that fold in the same direction. They have slit locks to secure the panels in place.
  • Reverse Tuck End – Similar to straight tuck end boxes, this packaging has folding panels. The difference is that the bottom panel folds in a different direction.
  • Snap-Lock Bottom – Also called 1-2-3 bottom box, this type of packaging has interlocking bottom flaps. The flaps provide a tight closure, so products don’t accidentally fall out of the box.
  • Auto-Bottom Boxes – With a pre-glued bottom, this box can be secured without the use of tape or flue. The glued bottom is ideal for packing heavy products.
  • Seal-End Boxes – These boxes have overlapping flaps on top and bottom. These flaps add strength and security to the boxes.
  • Hexagon Boxes – With six sides and a tuck top, these boxes are great for artisanal goods.

Mailer Boxes
A mailer box is a type of secondary packaging that’s designed for storing and shipping products. Made of durable corrugated cardboard, these boxes are more rigid and heftier compared to cardstock product boxes.

You will often see mailer boxes used as subscription boxes, but they can be used for any type of product or service. They have interlocking flaps that keep the box secure without the need for glue or packing tape.

Shipping Boxes
Shipping boxes are utilitarian packaging that is also made of corrugated cardboard. These boxes are sturdy, making them ideal for delivering products over long distances. Shipping boxes come in Regular Slotted Container (RSC) style, which has a pre-glued bottom for fast assembly. With RSC boxes, all you need to do is fold the flaps in the middle and seal the top and bottom with tape.

Modern shipping boxes can now be printed inside and outside and in full color to match your branding. This allows you to advertise your brand as the box travels to your customers’ homes.

Custom Features

The advantage of ordering custom boxes is that you have the freedom to design them in any way you see fit. This helps create a unique unboxing experience that customers love to share on social media. To make a good first impression, both the inside and outside of your box design need to be visually pleasing.

Did you know that you can print inside custom boxes? A pleasant unboxing experience doesn’t have to end the moment the customer opens the package. By printing personalized messages inside the box, you extend that good first impression and encourage more purchases in the future. Finishing such as spot UV, die-cut designs, and special laminations can make your custom box look and feel more luxurious.
