And this is particularly good news for the unknown author, especially me, as I’m currently copywriting my first book, a men’s fashion how-to guide.

Although it used to be associated with poor design, subpar quality, and underwhelming sales, “self-publishing” is no longer a dirty word in the book industry. You can not only publish a book with quality that rivals what you’ll find in a bookstore, but you can also even get the same success. Whether you’re creating an eBook or a printed version or both, these services cater to all your self-publishing needs, from design to copy editing to even distribution through Amazon and iBooks. And you don’t even have to hire a professional to design your book—you can simply do it yourself if you want.

This blog post can’t cover everything you need to know about self-publishing, but here are a few simple tips to help you get started.

Choose Photos the Right Way

If you’re going to include images in your book, you can’t just grab whatever you like from the Internet. You need to use photography provider like Getty or iStock to purchase rights to use images. The last thing you want is to get sued or have your book removed from stores because they include images that you don’t have permission to use.

Readability Is Key

For paragraph text, you have to make sure you use fonts that are appealing to the eye. Serif fonts, like Garamond and Book Antiqua, are recommended as the characters are very easy to follow. You have more freedom when choosing fonts for the book cover, unit and chapter titles, and subheadings.

Of course, paying to have your work proofed is optional, but if you’re going to do it yourself you need to make sure it’s perfect. People won’t take your writing seriously if there are typos or other glaring mistakes in formatting and style.

Getting the Word Out Matters

You can use social networking tools like Facebook and Twitter to promote your work, but you’ll need to spend a little green if you want to reach a larger audience. Kickstarter is an excellent service you can use to raise funds to cover the cost of publication and marketing. Because let’s face it, no matter how exciting or well written your book is, it won’t really matter if no one knows about it.
