I had the chance to interview one of them, Ada Rosman of Ada Rosman Jewelry<\/a>. A talented metalsmith who handcrafts beautiful jewelry. Case in point, how pretty are these gemstone and metal pieces?<\/p>\n<\/div>

Ada and her family are immigrants from Communist Poland. Among the things she brought with her are the value of hard work, the courage to dream big, and the belief that anything is possible.<\/p>\n

Ada\u2019s love for metalsmithing came unexpectedly, but it all worked out for the best. She found the passion that inspired her to be her most creative self.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Tell us about your\u00a0<\/span>jewelry<\/span>\u00a0business. How did it start?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>I started my\u00a0<\/span>jewelry<\/span>\u00a0business soon after I\u00a0<\/span>graduat<\/span>ed\u00a0<\/span>from the University of Washington.\u00a0<\/span>I took a metalsmithing class\u00a0<\/span>during the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>winter quarter of what was\u202fsupposed\u202fto\u202fbe my last year at the University.\u00a0<\/span>

<\/span>I loved it so much (thanks to Professor Mary Hu) that I dropped both of my other majors and got a BFA degree in Metals.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Why types of\u00a0<\/span>jewelry<\/span>\u00a0do you make?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I have a production line of\u00a0<\/span>jewelry<\/span>\u00a0that I sell<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>It\u2019s<\/span>made up of ready to mail items<\/span>,<\/span>custom work<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and\u202fpersonalize<\/span>d<\/span>\u202fpieces.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Ada shares how much she<\/span>\u00a0enjoy<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>creative\u00a0<\/span>process that goes into every piece<\/span>. But if she\u00a0<\/span>has<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to choose between ready-made and custom\u2026\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>I truly love making custom\u00a0<\/span>jewelry<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>because<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>it gives me the chance to create wearable pieces of artwork that tell the story of the wearer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>enjoy the entire process from designing with the client to creating unique heirloom-quality pieces of <\/span>jewelry<\/span>\u00a0and accessories.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Walk us through your creative process. How does each piece come to life?\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>Each piece starts out as an idea<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>I begin\u00a0<\/span>with<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a quick sketch<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and then create<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>mock-ups<\/span> on the computer. Everything I make starts out as raw sterling silver material in a silver shee<\/span>t<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>
<\/span>E<\/span>ach<\/span>\u00a0item is lovingly cut out with a\u202f<\/span>jeweler<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s<\/span>\u202fsaw, soldered with my studio torch<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>leaned<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>with my flex shaft. Some pieces are also given a patina bath to create a vintage\u00a0<\/span>feel.\u202fAll\u00a0<\/span>the pieces\u00a0<\/span>I make are\u00a0<\/span>done<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in-house.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\"polishing

What is your\u00a0<\/span>favorite<\/span>\u00a0piece so far<\/span>\u00a0and what is the story<\/span>\u00a0behind it?\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>I<\/span> haven\u2019t had a chance to share it online yet, but I recently completed a <\/span>unique<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>custom order<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>I\u00a0<\/span>made<\/span> a 25th-anniversary wedding ring out of\u00a0<\/span>a woman\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>wedding ring.\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>
<\/span>The whole process was a wonderful experience<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>I met the client in person<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>discuss<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0elements she admired<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>We\u00a0<\/span>also<\/span>\u00a0incorporate<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0lots of sentimental details into the new ring. There were heart elements<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>which originally had been hand-drawn by her two children<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0pierced out from sheets of\u00a0<\/span>metal to have a sweet little reminder of them.\u00a0<\/span>

<\/span>When I\u00a0<\/span>finished, I was\u00a0<\/span>so<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>thankful and thrilled that she\u00a0<\/span>picked me to create such\u202f<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>unique and truly special ring for her.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Besides\u00a0<\/span>jewelry<\/span>, Ada also makes key chains, bookmarks,\u00a0<\/span>and <\/span>home\u00a0<\/span>d\u00e9cor<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>including<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>picture frames.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

What challenges do you face as an artist and business owner?<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing able to separate work from family time and raising a child.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

What business or personal milestone has inspired you to keep on creating?<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving the opportunity to speak at the Tacoma Art Museum about my work as well as my business. It was such a special experience and privilege to be included in an amazing line-up of artists that I admired.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ada hopes for a promising future\u2014not just for her\u2014but for other local artisans as well. She looks forward to having a space where artists and makers like herself can showcase their work and hold workshops for the public.<\/p>\n

For now, Ada is happy doing what she loves and promotes her handmade jewelry on her Facebook<\/a> and Instagram<\/a> pages. Despite the convenience, she still prefers to do it the old-fashioned way.<\/p>\n
