In a study conducted by the University of California in San Diego, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20100106062616\/http:\/\/hmi.ucsd.edu\/howmuchinfo_research_report_consum.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">average American consumes around 34 GB of data per day<\/a>\u00a0outside of work. In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/okdork.com\/why-content-goes-viral-what-analyzing-100-millions-articles-taught-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research conducted by OkDork and BuzzSumo<\/a>\u00a0on social media content, the infographic topped the list of content with the highest averages shares, with a few thousand shares shy of 15,000.<\/p>\n<p>The effectiveness of the infographic lies deep in human psychology. As I\u2019ve mentioned, we rely heavily on visual information. Research on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/okdork.com\/why-content-goes-viral-what-analyzing-100-millions-articles-taught-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">persuasive properties of color<\/a>\u00a0found out that color in illustrations increased a reader\u2019s willingness to read by 80% and attention span by 82%.<\/p>\n<p>Another\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130423151414\/http:\/\/www.macrovu.com\/VTVCInterEffectiveness.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research from Wharton School of Business<\/a>\u00a0revealed that\u00a0information presented in both visual and verbal forms persuaded 67% of its audience compared to only 50% persuaded by verbal presentation alone.<\/p>\n<\/div><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"bde-image2-77579-108 bde-image2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nextdayflyers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/2-768x346-1.jpg\" alt=\"Effect of infographics on readers\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nextdayflyers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/2-768x346-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nextdayflyers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/2-768x346-1-300x135.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\"><div class=\"bde-rich-text-77579-109 bde-rich-text breakdance-rich-text-styles\">\n<p>While the infographic may be the most shared social media content type, it is also harder to pull off. A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130423151414\/http:\/\/www.macrovu.com\/VTVCInterEffectiveness.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">separate analysis of a million articles by Moz<\/a>\u00a0found a low number of shares in the infographic posts they analyzed. The top infographics in their sample were shared more than 10,000 times. However, over 50%\u00a0had zero backlinks\u00a0and 25% had less than 10 shares in total across all networks.<\/p>\n<p>Moz attributed this curious statistic to\u00a0a recent trend to turn everything into an infographic leading to many poor pieces of content. It may be easy to transform information into visual format but your design as well as your choices on which information to highlight can greatly affect your post\u2019s shareability.<\/p>\n<\/div><h2 class=\"bde-heading-77579-110 bde-heading post-mark-heading\">\n2. A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hubspot.com\/marketing\/content-social-media-popularity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">similar research by Hubspot<\/a>\u00a0also found the same thing, with lists claiming the most social traction by 22.45% of the total shares within the six-month period of their research. However, an extensive study by\u00a0social network analyst Gilad Lotan found out that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/i-data\/29-reasons-youre-reading-this-article-fbf4671327e3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">odd-numbered lists also work quite well<\/a>. Lotan analyzed the content by Buzzfeed, the first thing that comes to mind when it comes to listicles, over the course of three months. Odd number length list posts tend to have higher audience scores on average, with the number 29 scoring highest.<\/p>\n<\/div><h2 class=\"bde-heading-77579-117 bde-heading post-mark-heading\">\n3. Yes, out of all the news and feature stories made by the news outlet, a quiz topped the list in terms of popularity and shareability. OkDork and BuzzSumo reveal a simple and selfish reason\u2014it feeds our ego.\u00a0The quiz earns the third spot solely because it fuels our identity and narcissism. After all, the quiz is not only made to be consumed as most content is. But rather, it makes users do something for a payoff at the end. By sharing quiz results in social media, users show something about themselves, what their tastes are, what they are interested in, or what things they value.<\/p>\n<p>Moz also found a similar result in their research. However, they noted that despite the hundreds of thousands of shares generated by online quizzes, they are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/blog\/content-shares-and-links-insights-from-analyzing-1-million-articles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rarely linked to by top level domains.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><h2 class=\"bde-heading-77579-123 bde-heading post-mark-heading\">\n4. In the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/okdork.com\/why-content-goes-viral-what-analyzing-100-millions-articles-taught-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media content research by OkDork and Buzzsumo<\/a>, they broke down the articles by the emotion that each\u00a0evoked in the reader.\u00a0The top 3 emotions they found were \u201cawe\u201d at 25% followed by \u201claughter\u201d at 17% and \u201camusement\u201d at 15%. All of these are positive emotions. The research cited Dove\u2019s successful\u00a0<em>Real Beauty Sketches.\u00a0<\/em>The video featured a forensic scientist sketching a subject\u2019s face based on their own verbal description of themselves. Then it compared that to a stranger\u2019s description. The stranger\u2019s account generated more accurate and far more appealing portraits. The video currently stands at 67 million views in YouTube and generated a lot of marketing studies on the effect of powerful emotional experience.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XpaOjMXyJGk<\/p>\n<p>OkDork listed the primary reasons why people share positive emotional stories: People want to share valuable and entertaining content with others. They also want to define themselves by the things they share and the causes they care about. They want to grow and nourish relationships with their friends.<\/p>\n<p>As a general rule, negative emotions are a no-no when it comes to shareability. However, OkDork noted that while controversial opinions may divide your audience, those who agree with you are more likely to share your content.<\/p>\n<\/div><h2 class=\"bde-heading-77579-128 bde-heading post-mark-heading\">\n5. In social media research by OkDork, Facebook posts with at least one image\u00a0have twice as many shares as posts without an image. They also receive 84% more link clicks than a simple text or link post. But does it mean you should always make infographics for your articles? Should you make odd-numbered lists every day? The answer is not necessarily.<\/p>\n<p>While these are the most shareable social media content types, your shareability still lies in the content itself. No matter how visually appealing or emotional your content is, it won\u2019t work if it doesn\u2019t resonate well with your target audience. Learn your audience first. Be sensitive to the things they really want.
