Consumers to spend more on greeting cards this holiday season

Reflecting the continued appeal of print media as a form of personal communication, Shutterfly has released the results of a survey, finding the large majority of U.S. consumers plan to spend more on greeting cards this holiday season than last.

The study by the online photo publishing company revealed 85 percent of Americans plan on sending the same amount or more greeting cards than last year.

"Personalized holiday cards have become so central to holiday celebrations that creating the card itself has become a favorite tradition for many families," said Meg Bohnert of Shutterfly.

The study, conducted in August, involved more than 500 participants and also found that 77 percent prefer messages be kept brief.

With the holidays approaching and so many Americans already beginning to get into the holiday spirit, consumers are looking to greeting cards to connect with friends and family. Other recent reports have found that email greetings elicit fewer responses than print greetings, suggesting that the effort involved with creating a greeting card is appreciated by recipients.
